Millsaps College traveled to Oglethorpe University on Jan. 3
to face the Stormy Petrels in a basketball match-up. The contest
was the first for the Majors after their return from the holiday
break.
The game remained close throughout, with both teams shooting
at least 50 percent in the first half. Oglethorpe built a six
point lead with 7:33 left to go in the half, but that lead did
not last long. Millsaps continued to fight back against the Stormy
Petrels, building a ten point lead of their own with 3:24 to
go in the half.
At the half time break, the teams went in to
their locker rooms with the Majors holding a two point advantage – 44-42.
The Petrels came out ready to play in the second
half. They took over the Majors’ lead and built it to
15 points, leaving the Majors with a large gap to fill. Millsaps
was able
to fill
that gap, though. The Majors tied the ballgame with a score
of 78 at the 4:55 point in the game.
With 49 seconds left to play in the half, the score became tied
again at 85. The two teams were forced to take their contest
into overtime.
Millsaps took the early advantage in overtime, but the Petrels
managed to keep at least a one-point lead throughout the majority
of the period. The game ended with Oglethorpe winning 93-92.
Edrick Montgomery had a standout game for Millsaps, scoring
20 points and grabbing 26 rebounds for his team. Rodney Rogan
had 21 points for Millsaps and 7 rebounds as well, while Justin
