Majors Lose in First Round of SCAC Tournament

MEMPHIS, Tenn.. — The #6 seed Millsaps Majors faced #3 seed Centre College in the first round of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference tournament on Fri., Feb. 24. The Majors, who beat Centre in their last match-up played in Kentucky, looked to upset the #3 seed.

In the first half of the game, the Majors appeared to be on the right track as they led Centre 35-31 at the half. The Majors and Colonels continued their close contest in the second half, ending regulation with a tied score of 66.

The contest went into overtime, but the defense-heavy first overtime period would not be enough to decide the ballgame. The Majors and Colonels each scored four points in the first overtime and were forced to take the game into a second, making the contest the first double overtime game in SCAC tourney history.

The Colonels were able to pull ahead of the Majors in the second overtime period, scoring 16 points while the Majors only scored ten. Centre won the game by a final score of 86-80.

Throughout the game the Majors were beat at the free throw line. Centre made 29 of their 38 free throw opportunities while Millsaps made 16 of their only 21 opportunities.

Sophomore Edrick Montgomery pumped in 34 points, tying the SCAC Tournament record for points in a single game.. Senior Tyler Warren scored 28 points in his final game. The loss brings the Majors season to an end with a 14-12 record.
