Lady Pirates Score 32 Points in the Paint in 64-42 Win
Millsaps held to 29 percent shooting in fourth-straight loss

January 4, 2008

JACKSON Junior forward Tiffany Whitmore scored a career-high 23 points and Millsaps committed a season-low 16 turnovers but Southwestern held the Majors without a field goal the final 9:36 of regulation and ended the game on a 16-0 run to win convincingly 64-42.

With just eight players dressed out for the Majors due to injury, Southwestern took advantage of its deep bench, outscoring Millsaps 24-7 including eight points from senior Amanda Gordon who also grabbed nine boards and six points from frosh Staley Mullins.

Southwestern (8-3, 2-1 SCAC) took a 15-point lead into intermission, 37-22, on the heels of 52 percent shooting from the floor. Senior Beth Thomas chipped in eight of her 10 points in the first half, while five different players added a 3-point bucket.

Millsaps (2-7, 0-2 SCAC) cut what was a 17-point, 43-26, Lady Pirate lead at the 18:02 mark in the second half down to just six, 48-42, with 8:43 remaining, using eight of Whitmore's 23 points during the 16-5 surge.

The Majors, however, began forcing up bad shots down the stretch, missing their final nine shots and turning the ball over five times as they were held without a field goal the final 9:36.

Southwestern closed the game on a 16-0 run to make the final margin larger than the game appeared, taking advantage of the missed shots and turning them into buckets on the other end of the floor.

For Millsaps, Whitmore led all scorers with 23, while junior Crystal Dickerson had 10 boards and seven points. In a career-high 20 minutes off the bench, freshman Kristy Dowdy added her first bucket in a Majors' uniform (3-pointer in the first half) to go along with three steals, two assists and two rebounds (all new career-highs).

Southwestern was led by junior Natasha Azizi's 12 points and senior Kelli Hill's five assists.

Millsaps will try and get back in the win column tomorrow evening, playing host to SCAC- leader Trinity University (8-2, 3-0 SCAC) at 6 p.m. The game was originally scheduled for Sunday, but has been moved up a day to Saturday.
