JACKSON – Despite
a career-high 29 points from freshman forward Ronda
Webb, the
visiting Trinity University Lady Tigers scored 20 points in transition
and utilized their height in the post by scoring 42 points in
the
paint to knock off Millsaps on the road 85-71.
With four 6-footers on the roster,
Trinity (9-2, 4-0 SCAC) dumped the ball inside time and time
again where the Majors could not stop them. Standout junior Krista
Prato Matthews did the bulk of the scoring in the paint, hitting
8-of-11 field goals for 16 points, while senior Meghan Scholbe
added 16 points and Tierney Hughes had 12 points and six assists.
Millsaps (2-8, 0-3 SCAC) fell behind
8-0 in the early going and trailed by double digits a majority
of the contest before rallying midway through the second half
to cut the gap down to just four at 50-46.
From there, Trinity pulled away with
a 20-7 run on the heels of three-straight buckets from Scholbe
to take its largest lead of the game at 21 points and put the
game out of reach.
In the Majors' fifth-straight loss
overall and third consecutive in league play, the team showed
a lot of fight to battle back within single digits on several
occasions. Junior Tiffany Whitmore followed up a strong performance
from Webb with 19 points, eight rebounds and six assists.
Crystal Dickerson added 10 points and three steals to go along
with freshman Cori Tucker's game and career-high seven assists.
Millsaps will
open a three-game road swing on Friday, Jan. 11, traveling to
SCAC foe Colorado College. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
CST. The Majors will then play at Austin College on Sunday before
a Monday non-conference affair with the University of Dallas.
