Fernandez, 15th-ranked Lady Tigers Too Much for Millsaps
Majors finish SCAC road trip 1-1, will open five-game homestand Wednesday

January 27, 2008

GREENCASTLE, Ind. Sophomore Jenna Fernandez doubled her season scoring average in recording her first career double-double with a game-high 28 points and 12 rebounds and the DePauw Lady Tigers grabbed 20 offensive boards in their 21st-straight home win 78-60.

Currently ranked 15th by D3hoops.com and 17th in the USA Today/ESPN Coaches' Poll, DePauw (15-3, 8-0 SCAC) also picked up its 40th-straight regular season home win and 37th-straight SCAC home win.

Millsaps (4-13, 2-7 SCAC) hung tough with the defending national champions in the first half on 46 percent shooting, closing the half on an 8-2 run after trailing by 18, to trail just 37-25 at intermission.

DePauw shot just under 38 percent but hit 12-of-15 free throws to head into the lockerroom with a 12-point edge, led by Fernandez with 16 points and six rebounds on 5-of-7 aim and Kalei Lowes with nine points and a pair of steals. They also took advantage of 12 first half turnovers for the Majors, turning them into 20 points on the offensive end.

The teams traded buckets the opening 9:52 of the second half with the Lady Tigers holding a 52-40 lead before a 12-4 DePauw run stretched the lead out to 20 with 6:52 remaining.

Seconds later, the game took a turn for the worse for the Majors when junior Jessica Bowie was whistled for a flagrant foul after throwing an elbow on the offensive end. It appeared as if Bowie was on the wrong end of an elbow on the defensive end of the floor, nevertheless, play continued and Millsaps was hit with a huge blow on an already scarce roster when second-year head coach Mary Bolton decided to sit Bowie the final 6 minutes of regulation.

After the loss of Bowie, DePauw went on another mini-run and continued its dominance down low, scoring 12 of their final 14 points in the paint to come away with a 78-60 win.

DePauw scored 29 points off 18 Major turnovers, outrebounded the visitors 44-33 and got 25 points from its bench, led by Katie Matthews with eight points and Sarah Merkel with six.

Millsaps was led in the scoring column by junior Tiffany Whitmore with 13 points, followed by Crystal Dickerson and Bowie with 11 points apiece. Bowie also added eight rebounds and four blocks, while Dickerson picked up a team-high five assists.

The Majors will open a five-game homestand at the Hangar Dome on Wedneday, Jan. 30, playing host to non-conference foe Rust College. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
