Majors Earn Split in Millsaps Invitational
Majors fall 42-40 to LaGrange, bounce back to defeat Rust 78-55

November 19, 2006

JACKSON -- Less than 24 hours after a heartbreaking 42-40 loss to LaGrange College in Millsaps’ season-opener, the Majors rebounded with a 23-point win over Rust College thanks in part to five players posting double-digit point totals.

In Friday’s matchup with LaGrange, neither team could get anything going in the first half.

The two teams combined to shoot 13-of-57 (23 percent) from the floor and 0-for-10 from three point range as the score read 18-17 LaGrange at halftime.

Millsaps jumped out to a quick 9-0 lead to start the game, fueled by freshman Marianne Smith’s jumper two minutes in.

After nearly six minutes of scoreless basketball from LaGrange, Lindsey Moore got things jump started for the Panthers, hitting a layup that kick started a 10-1 run.

The lead went back-and-forth the remainder of the half, before Heather Power’s jumper with eight seconds left before the half gave the Panthers a slight lead.

Power’s jumper started another furious run from LaGrange, as they went on an 11-0 run and never trailed the rest of the game.

The lead would get as close as two or three points before the final buzzer sounded and the Majors were hit with their first loss of the season.

LaReina Adams and Deborah Sturgis led the way for the Majors, posting a pair of double-doubles in the loss. Adams had 16 points, 17 rebounds while Sturgis chipped in with 12 points, 10 rebounds. Leslie Frese also added 15 rebounds, three assists and two steals.

Millsaps (1-1) wasted no time bouncing back on Saturday, dropping Rust College 78-55 and shooting nearly 50 percent from the floor.

With the game knotted at 8-8 less than three minutes in, Frese hit her first three point basket of the season that jump started a 14-0 run for the Majors.

The Lady Bearkats finally responded after 7:02 without a basket, cutting the lead to 10 before Millsaps pushed the lead back to 18 at the half.

Eight different Majors got at least a basket in the first half.

Despite only being outscored 38-33 in the second half, the 18-point halftime deficit was too much for the Lady Bearkats to overcome, as they fell to 0-2 on the year.

Adams posted her second-straight double-double for the Majors, going 9-for-15 from the floor and 6-of-8 from the free throw line for 24 points and 14 rebounds. She also picked up three steals and two assists on the night.

Frese also added a double-double of her own, chipping in with 12 points and 11 rebounds on 4-of-8 shooting, while Deborah Sturgis and Crystal Dickerson were both a rebound shy of a double-double with 10 and 13 points.

Five different Majors scored in double-digits, with all 10 players seeing playing time.

Millsaps will be back in action Tuesday night, traveling to Dallas, Texas, to face off with the University of Dallas at 7 p.m. The Majors will play their next three games on the road before returning home Dec. 5 to host Louisiana College at 5 p.m.
