SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- In a four-day, conference-opening road swing to central Texas, the Millsaps women’s basketball team was no match for Southwestern and Trinity University, falling to the Lady Pirates 73-45 on Friday and the Lady Tigers 90-51 on Sunday.
Despite a season-high 20 points from Crystal Dickerson and LaReina Adams’ third double-double of the season, Millsaps (1-4, 0-2 SCAC) couldn’t overcome a 17-point halftime deficit, 28 percent shooting and 25 turnovers in Friday’s loss in Georgetown.
Southwestern (4-1, 1-0 SCAC) went 14-deep on the bench, shot 51 percent from the floor and picked up 24 team assists in the lopsided 28-point win.
The Lady Pirates took advantage of 48 bench points to the Majors’ five, including Kendal George’s 14 points in 19 minutes and Beth Thomas’ 14 points in 24 minutes.
In Sunday’s finale in San Antonio, the Majors’ shooting woes continued, shooting a combined 16-of-62 (25 percent) from the floor in a 39-point loss to Trinity. Millsaps also committed a season-high 31 turnovers, gave up a season-high 90 points and were outscored 51-12 off the bench.
A bright spot for the Majors, however, was that freshman Marianne Smith picked up a game and season-high 15 points and three rebounds in 26 minutes while Dickerson picked up a season-high 10 rebounds. Leslie Frese also fell a point shy of a double-double, chipping in 11 points, nine rebounds.
Trinity (3-2, 2-0 SCAC) sent 15 different players to the floor, including 13 who recorded at least a bucket. The Lady Tigers were led by Meghan Scholbe’s 14 points, seven rebounds, four steals and two blocks, while K. Prato Matthews chipped in 14 and Jennifer Wieman added 13.
Millsaps looks to snap a three-game losing skid Tuesday, Dec. 5, playing host to the Louisiana College Wildcats. Game time is slated for 5 p.m. in the Hangar Dome.
