The Millsaps Majors amassed 241 yards
rushing and 341 yards of total offense as they held the Mississppi College
Choctaws to just 211 total yards on their way to a 9-0 win over the Chocs.
The recently renewed "Backyard Brawl" series lead has now shifted
to the Majors 3-2.
The Majors sophomore running back Tyson Roy gained
115 yards on 15 carries and freshman ballcarrier Eryc Lorino picked up
99 yards rushing on 20 carries and scored the lone Millsaps touchdown
to open the second quarter. The Chocs defensive line gave up nearly 30
pounds to the Majors at every position making the difference in the game
and wearing down the Chocs defense. Quarterback Brandon Morris completed
12-22 passes for 109 yards.
The Chocs never entered the Majors red zone, while
the Majors scored twice in five attempts in the red zone. Kicker Todd
Rhoden connected on a 20-yard field goal, but missed the PAT on Lorino's
touchdown. The Majors could have built on the lead before two fumbles
inside the five-yard line cost them the chance. Each team fumbled four
times and recovered the ball twice.
The swarming defense displayed by the Majors held
the Chocs star running back Bryan Shumaker to 48 yards on 11 carries before
he was sent limping to the sideline before halftime. He did not return.
Quarterback Scotty Elliot was rushed out of the pocket several times and
finished the night 5 of 14 passing for 38 yards.
Stephen Parr led the Majors in tackles with nine
followed by fellow linebacker Marshall Brown with seven. Brown had one
of the Majors four tackles for loss and he also had a fumble recovery.
Linebacker Mike Pope had five tackles, one sack for three yards and tackle
for loss at three yards. Emmitt Johnson and David Cutter had one tackle
for loss each and defensive tackle Casey Younger had two tackles and forced
a fumble. Safeties Ross Rutledge and Joey Doxey totaled seven tackles
with Rutledge recovering a fumble.
The Majors will travel to Emory, VA Saturday to
face Emory and Henry before coming home to face Belhaven Sept. 25. The
Millsaps/Belhaven battle billed as the "Riverside Rumble" will
be played at Newell Field on Riverside Drive in Jackson. The Blazers do
not have a home football field.
