Joseph Sets Career Marks, Majors Rout 'Roos 43-10
Millsaps improves to 2-1 (1-0 SCAC) with its second-straight lopsided road win

September 15, 2007

SHERMAN, Texas -- Junior quarterback Juan Joseph set career-highs in completions and yards, connecting on 32 of 44 passes for 355 yards and three touchdowns, and the Millsaps defense held Austin College scoreless in the second half en route to its second-straight win on the road to improve to 2-1 overall and 1-0 in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play.

Sophomore running back Brett Anderson and the Kangaroos took the opening play from scrimmage 72 yards for a score to take a 7-0 lead just 23 seconds in before the Majors offense exploded for 505 yards of total offense to outscore Austin 43-3 over the remainder of the contest.

After the 'Roos scored on their opening possession, Millsaps silenced the home crowd with a 6-play, 47-yard drive in 4:20. Joseph capped off a 6-for-6 drive through the air with a 20-yard touchdown strike to fellow junior Eric McCarty while Sam Herman knocked through the point after to knot the game at 7-7 with 11:59 left in the quarter.

The Majors' next possession ended with another Joseph to McCarty touchdown to push the lead out to 14-7, with senior fullback Neil Woodall hauling in a pair of catches for 21 yards that set up the score.

Millsaps looked to add another touchdown to the board to start off the second quarter but an unlucky fumble by Joseph on Austin's 2-yard line prevented the Majors from adding to their lead.

The luck turned just three plays later, as sophomore linebacker Lee Klein busted through the 'Roos line to tackle Evan Coachman in the end zone to record a safety.

Austin cut the Millsaps lead to 16-10 with minutes left before the halftime buzzer, putting together an 18-play, 60-yard drive that ate up 8:07 on the clock and ended with a Jonathan Hersh 37-yard field goal.

Jacob Hanberry's first interception of the season led to the Majors' final score of the half as Hanberry picked off an ill-advised pass from Andy Braly and returned it down to the 1-yard line with just 4.0 seconds left.

From there, Nick Namias followed behind his powerful offensive line to pick up his first rushing touchdown of the year and give the visitors a 22-10 halftime edge.

The two teams traded punts in the third quarter and neither got on the scoreboard.

The fourth quarter was all Millsaps, with the Majors outscoring the 'Roos 21-0 on a Kenneth Metzger 1-yard rush, a John Milazzo 78-yard touchdown reception from Joseph and a 20-yard touchdown strike from Burt Pereira to newcomer Michael Galatas.

The defense allowed just 30 yards in the quarter and 49 the entire second half, forcing Austin College into five punts a fumble and an interception.

Joseph connected with 13 different receivers on the afternoon, led by McCarty with seven catches for 89 yards and two scores, Donnie Epps with five catches for 51 yards, Galatas with five catches for 46 yards and a score and Milazzo who hauled in a 78-yard touchdown reception.

The defense surrendered just 10 points for the second consecutive week and allowed only 198 total yards and 10 first downs, led by Hanberry who picked up seven tackles and a 53-yard interception return.

Anderson finished with six carries for 88 yards to lead Austin College, as the 'Roos managed 161 yards of offense on the ground. Braly finished the game 5 of 12 for 37 yards, hooking up with Zach Koerner twice for 22 yards.

After three-straight road games to open the season, the Majors return home to Harper Davis Field this weekend, playing host to conference-foe Rhodes College at 1 p.m. on Family Weekend.
