STERLING,
Va. -- Junior college transfer Jonathan Brooks
was rewarded twice on Monday for picking off two passes
and returning a fumble 14 yards for a score in a Millsaps
45-7 win last Saturday, earning SCAC Defensive Player of
the Week honors and being named to D3football.com's National
Team of the Week.
It marked the first set of career weekly awards
in a Majors uniform for the Roxie, Miss., native.
"I was suprised and proud at the same time," Brooks said.
"It just lets me know that the hard work pays off. Being
named to the D3football.com Team of the Week was like icing
on the cake ... it made an already good day a great one."
Brooks' fumble return for a touchdown gave Millsaps a 21-0
edge in the first half while his two interceptions off Sewanee
starter Patrick Shelton added to his team-leading total of
four.
"The fumble was my first score on defense since I have been
playing at the college level," Brooks said. "It was also
my first at Millsaps so that just made it seem unreal when
I first scored."
The Majors' starting cornerback is tied for first in
the league in interceptions and sits in a three-way tie for
second
with
nine passes defended along with fellow starting cornerback
Marcus Harris.
"Leading the team in interceptions means a lot because
of the complexity of the system that we run," Brooks said.
"I think that by me stepping up in my first year I have earned
the respect of the older players."
On the year, Brooks has 18 tackles in addition
to a forced fumble and a fumble recovery for a score.
He becomes the fifth overall SCAC Player of the Week selection
and third Defensive Player of the Week selection for Millsaps
this season,
joining Casey Younger, Ronnie Wheat and Juan Joseph (twice).
Brooks
earns the third D3football.com nod for the Majors behind
Younger and freshman kicker Taylor Russolino.
