SEWANEE, Tenn. -- Sewanee’s football team could not
come back from the 28-0 lead that Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference
opponent
Millsaps had at the end of the first quarter in Sewanee on Saturday.
Although the Tigers had 390 total yards and scored three touchdowns,
they still fell to the Majors by a score of 35-18.
After
Millsaps’ Donnie
Epps, Tyson Roy, Canaan Farris, and Chris Jackson each scored
a touchdown in the first quarter, Sewanee
tightened up and played strong for the remainder of the game.
Sewanee’s
Jason Louden (Marietta, GA/Marietta) scored the only points of
the
second quarter with a 56 yards reception from
quarterback Wes Satterfield (Hartsville, TN/Trousdale County).
In the third, Sewanee once again recorded the only score with
a Chris Murphy (Sylacauga, AL/Syalacauga) touchdown reception from
Blake Mears (Lizella, GA/Mt. DeSales), leaving the score at 28-12
at the start of the fourth quarter.
Millsaps
would end Sewanee’s
hopes of a victory at the start of the fourth as Juan Joseph
threw a 43-yard touchdown reception
to Chris Jackson to take the score to 35-12.
Sewanee would answer one more time with a one-yard Satterfield
touchdown run. A third failed PAT conversion by Satterfield and
the Tigers would leave the final score at 35-18 in favor of the
Majors.
Satterfield passed for one touchdown and ran for one touchdown
in the contest. He had 207 yards passing on 19 completions and
118 yards rushing on 28 carries for a total of 325 yards. Mears
had 38 yards on the ground and caught 21 yards worth of passes
and also passed for a touchdown. Louden caught three passes for
75 yards, while Patrick Scott (Mobile, AL/McGill-Toolen) and Murphy
each had 40 yards receiving.
Defensively
for the Tigers, Lewis Dawson (Nashville, TN/MBA/Choate) led the
effort
with 11 total tackles and a forced fumble. AJ Jackson
(Rome, GA/Model) had seven tackles and Harlin Hickerson (Franklin,
TN/BGA) had six tackles and broke up a pass. George Twitty (Birmingham,
AL/Mtn. Brook) recovered two fumbles, while Conor Bozzi (Wallingford,
CT/Choate) and David Craig (Lake Wales, FL/All Saints’) each
had one fumble recovery.
After dropping their first three contests, the Majors have won
five-straight games to improve to 4-0 in the SCAC and 5-3
overall.
The win for Millsaps now sets up a Nov. 11 homecoming meeting with
No. 24 Trinity University for the conference title. Game time is
slated for 2 p.m. at Harper Davis Field.
