STERLING, Va. -- With the 2006 Division III football
season over and national powerhouse Mount Union receiving its eighth
national championship trophy in 11 years, Millsaps return specialist/wide
receiver Chris Jackson garnered first team all-America special teams
honors on Saturday as announced by the D3football.com staff. Jackson’s selection
as a first team return specialist is the league's first D3football.com
honoree since DePauw University's
Jamarcus Shephard and Trinity University's Jarrod Smith were both
selected to the first team in 2003.
In his only year in a Majors uniform, Jackson a 6-2, 205-pound
senior wide receiver and return specialist from Phenix City, Ala.,
shattered several single-season Millsaps records including kick
return yardage, kick returns, kick returns for a touchdown, punt
return yards and punts returned for a touchdown.
Besides leading the league in kick returns (22.7 yards per return),
Jackson also led all SCAC receivers with 65 receptions for 693
yards, nine touchdowns and 156.4 all-purpose yards per game (22nd
in the nation). Jackson became just the second player in league
history to take two punts to the end zone in a single game – a
34-12 victory over No. 12 Trinity.
“The one thing he (Chris) really brought to the team
this year was the explosiveness and the ability to score at any
point,” 18-year
football veteran and first year Millsaps linebackers coach Lane
Powell said. “Along with the New Orleans Saints holding training
camp here, our team making it to the playoffs, Chris earning all-America
honors and playing in a couple of bowl games, it brings awareness
to the school. It should help a lot with enrollment and the football
program.”
Jackson adds first team all-America to his list of accolades this
season, as he has also received D3football.com First Team all-South
region, Football Gazette Team of the Week, D3football.com
National Team of the Week, SCAC Special Teams Player
of the Year and SCAC Offensive Player of the Week honors.
