JACKSON, MS--Millsaps' (1-2 0-0 SCAC) plan against
Belhaven (3-1 2-1 MSC NAIA) was to control the line of scrimmage and burn
time off of the clock in order to keep the Blazers near unstoppable passing
attack led by senior quarterback and reigning Mid-South Conference Offensive
Player of the Year Brian Zbydneiwski off the field.
In the previous two games the Majors did exactly
that with both Tyson Roy and Eryc Lorino running for or near 100 yards
in both games. But in Saturday's 27-10 loss at the hands of the Blazers
Lorino was held to just two yards on three carries and Roy was held to
46 yards rushing on 11 attempts. Roy had 53 yards receiving and 22 yards
on kick returns to give him 121 total yards which included a 48 yard reception
in the first quarter.
The Majors offense attack received a boost in the
first quarter when quarterback Brandon Morris was replaced with true freshman
Raymece Savage. Savage led the Majors down the field setting up a chipshot
field goal for Tyler Alford from 32 yards out to put the Majors on the
scoreboard 7-3.
Savage led the only touchdown scoring drive for
the Majors in the second quarter after defensive tackle Matt McCain forced
a fumble from a Blazer wideout that was recoved by Kirk Jackson at the
Blazers 34-yard line.
Roy moved the ball down to the 25-yard line before
Savage connected with receiver Josh Hanna in the endzone with under a
minute to go before the half cutting the Blazers lead to 14-10.
The Blazers held the Majors scoreless in the second
half while tacking on two more scores although one of the extra point
attempts was blocked leaving a the score at 27-10.
The Majors were led again on defense by linebacker
Marshall Brown who collected 11 tackles, including 9 solo stops, followed
by freshman linebacker Stephen Parr with 8 total tackles.
Safety Ross Rutledge, middle linebacker Emmitt
Johnson and linebacker Cedric Lawrence had six tackles each. Freshmen
DB's Ronnie Wheat and Johnathan Tuck made a majority of their five tackles
each on special teams. Wheat had one tackle for loss for 13 yards including
one bone-jarring hit on special teams and Tuck had one pass break up.
Freshman linebacker Robbie Domke had the lone Majors sack of the Z-man
for a loss of five yards and cornerback Ray Kline forced a fumble.
Savage finished with a respectable line of 11-19
for 119 yards and one touchdown while Zbydneiwski finished well below
his average game passing going 25-35 for 256 yards and no touchdowns with
his longest pass going for 26 yards.
Savage completed passes to five receivers led by
Hanna with 3 catches for 34 yards and one touchdown. Christian Johnson
also caught three passes for 25 yards and Louis Conley and Ryan Hooper
caught two balls apiece. "Zeb" hit eight different receivers.
