The Millsaps Majors (4-4, 3-2) took over sole possesion
of third place in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference with a 28-19
win over SCAC rival Rhodes College in Memphis, TN Saturday.
Tyson Roy rushed for 254 yards on 37 carries and Christian Johnson pulled
in a Raymece Savage pass for 71 yards in the Majors second road conference
win in as many weeks.
The Majors, who led the SCAC in total defense entering
the game, got another boost from two-way player Josh Hanna. The wide receiver
picked off two passes from Rhodes' all-time passing leader, Daniel Swanstrom.
Swanstrom achieved that record against the Majors Saturday. He completed
24-40 passes for 260 yards and three TD's.
The Majors jumped out to the early lead on a Roy
5-yard touchdown run in the first quarter, but the Lynx answered with
a Swanstrom pass to Matt Dement three minutes later. The score flip-flopped
throughout the game with the Majors leading 14-6 at halftime.
Rhodes scored with three minutes remaining in the
third quarter to bring the score within two at 14-12, but the Majors would
answer just one minute later. Savage connected with Johnson on the 71-yarder
to end a two-play drive for 73 yards. Savage completed 8 of 18
passes for 116 yards.
EJ Johnson, Matt Kirkpatrick and Marshall Brown each had six tackles
to lead the Majors. Johnson had one TFL for two yards and Kirkpatrick
had one TFL for 1 yard and a pass break up. End Cedric Lawrence had five
tackles including two QB sacks for six yards.
Ross Rutledge had four tackles one TFL for nine yards and one PBU and
Johnathan Tuck had four tackles and a sack for seven yards. David Cutter
had two TFL's including a two-yard sack of Swanstrom and Robbie Domke
had the fifth sack of Swanstrom on the night for a three-yard loss. Joey
Doxey had two pass break up's to go with three tackles.
The Majors were 4-6 on fourth down conversions and they ran the ball
48 times as a team for 260 yards totaling 376 yards of total offense.
The Majors had no turnovers for the first time since the Centre game on
Oct. 9.
