The Millsaps Majors (4-5, 3-3)
dreams of an upset over the top-ranked Trinity Tigers were dashed by a
last-second interception in the endzone on fourth-and-two with ten seconds
to play.
Freshman quarterback Raymece
Savage, who threw for a season-high 240 yards on 17-32 passing, led a
12 play 55-yard drive for the Majors over the last 2:12 only to have Tiger
safety John Gunter intercept his pass in the endzone with seven seconds
remaining. After the touchback, Tiger QB Dan DesPlaines knelt on the ball
allowing the final seconds to run out.
The Majors took a 14-10 lead
into the halftime break after Tyson Roy scored on a 34-yard run, a run
where Roy eclipsed 1,000 yards rushing on the season, and a Louis Conley
21-yard touchdown catch from Savage. Roy was held below 100 yards rushing
for the third time this season with 82 yards on 16 carries, including
a fumble lost to the Tigers. Eryc Lorino ran for 38 yards on 10 carries
and Conley had 143 yards receiving on nine catches in the loss.
The only scoring play of the
third quarter came on a Tiger touchdown pass from DesPlaines to Daniel
Lacroix for eight yards giving the Tigers the 17-14 lead. The Tigers tacked
on another field goal by Todd Canion, this one from 36 yards out, to open
the fourth quarter. The All-SCAC kicker nailed a 23-yarder in the second
quarter.
The Majors stopped a Tiger
drive on the 23-yard line forcing a field goal, but holder Jacob Cannon
took the snap rolled out and hit a wide-open Zach Byars in the endzone
for a touchdown, increasing the Tigers lead to 27-14.
The Majors would rally on their
next possession behind Savage. A 12-play 72-yard drive, orchestrated masterfully
by Savage, where he completed passes to Roy for nine yards, then Christian
Johnson for 20 yards. Flushed from the pocket Savage would pick up 11
more yards on the QB keeper.
Then, on fourth and ten from
the Tiger 36-yard line, Savage found Lorino open and the freshman running
back scampered for 15 yards, picking up the first down. Savage ran for
another four yards and Lorino picked up three more. On third and three
Roy picked up four yards making it first and goal for the Majors on the
ten-yard line. On the next play Savage threw the fade to the corner of
the endzone where Conley was waiting. Tyler Alford's kick was good closing
the Tigers lead to 27-21.
The Majors forced the Tigers
into a three-and-out situation on the next drive and Roy would give the
Majors decent field position on the punt return on their own 39-yard line.
The Majors would convert a
third and three on Roy's 4-yard run, then Savage found Conley again for
15 yards. Then Savage would find Johnson for seven yards and Roy for 15
yards moving the ball down to the Tiger 13-yard line. Savage to Johnson
for three yards led to a third and seven situation. Roy would carry the
ball down to the six-yard line with 14 seconds remaining when the Majors
called for a timeout.
On the ensueing play, Savage
would be forced from the pocket to his right, but the Tigers had blanket
coverage on the intended receiver and Gunter stepped in and picked off
the pass.
The Majors allowed Jerrold
Jones to run for 100 yards and score one touchdown and wideout Robert
Kelner had 98 yards receiving on 11 catches. DesPlaines finished 22-31
for 258 yards passing.
Savage had 16 yards rushing
and Roy finished with 177 total yards including 43 yards receiving, 23
yards on kickoff returns and four yards on punt returns.
Freshman linebacker Canaan
Farris led all tacklers with 11 followed by safety Joey Doxey with eight
for the Majors. Doxey had one pass breakup and shared a tackle for loss
with Marshall Brown, who had seven tackles. Safety Ross Rutledge and middle
linebacker EJ Johnson had seven tackles each. Rutledge broke up one DesPlaines
pass.
Defensive end Casey Younger
had four tackles including a sack of DesPlaines that eventually led to
a field goal for the Tigers. Hard-hitting cornerback Ray Kline and hulking
defensive tackle Ishmael Lockhart totaled seven tackles. Defensive end
Cedric Lawrence turned in another big game with two tackles for loss totaling
eight yards. Linebacker Robbie Domke deflected a pass and the experiment
with WR/CB Josh Hanna playing both ways, paid dividends with the junior
picking up two tackles and three pass breakups, including one in the endzone.
Hanna had two interceptions last week against Rhodes in his second game
at corner.
As a team the Majors rushed for 126 yards on 32 carries and threw for
240 yards. The 240-yard passing day for Savage was the most for a Major
signal caller since 2000. the Majors 366 yards of total offense was trumped
by the Tigers 413 total yards (132 on the ground, 281 in the air). The
Majors lost one fumble, which was lost, and the Tigers were 4-4 in the
red zone compared to 1-2 for the Majors.
Weather was 56 degrees and Chilly.
Seniors Justin Adkisson, Ryan
Hooper, Matt McCollough, David Moore, and Brandon Morris were all recognized
before kickoff on the field with their parents.
