Quarterback Ross Wiethoff completed 12-of-16 passes for 205 yards
and rushed for 103 yards, as the DePauw Tigers (5-1, 3-0 SCAC) overwhelmed
the Millsaps Majors (1-5, 0-3 SCAC) 51-14 at Blackstock Stadium
in Greencastle, Indiana.
The statistics were telling, as the Tigers dominated the Majors
in almost every phase of the game. The conference's best defense
held the Majors to just 282 yards in total offense and only 56 on
the ground. Tyson Roy was limited to 31 yards on 10 carries, reaching
the endzone once. The Tigers, also possessing the conference's leading
rushing attack, amassed 257 yards and scored five touchdowns on
the ground.
The freshman duo of Matt Foisy and Eric McCarty were once again
a bright spot for the Majors. Foisy, who leads SCAC receivers in
yards per catch, had five catches for 133 yards and one touchdown.
McCarty had three catches for 28 yards, not including a 68-yarder
that was called back. Raymece Savage also had three catches for
34 yards in just his second game as a receiver.
Billy Bob Orsagh was roughed up by the Tigers, getting sacked four
times and pressured numerous more. Orsagh finished 11-for-24 for
162 yards and one interception. Juan Joseph came in late and went
3-for-6 for 64 yards, including a 49-yard touchdown.
DePauw began the game with a 71-yard scoring drive, capped off by
Jason Murphy's three-yard run. Wiethoff completed a 50-yard pass
to tight end Chase Jonason on the first play of the game to set
up the score.
Millsaps benefited from excellent field position and had two scoring
opportunities in the first quarter. After a solid punt return by
Foisy and a 28-yard scramble by Orsagh, the Majors had the ball
at the DePauw 22. The drive would stall and ended in a missed field
goal. The Major defense forced a fumble out of all-SCAC running
back Jeremiah Marks which was recovered by Emmitt Johnson at the
DePauw 30; but the Majors were again denied by the Tiger defense.
A Tyler Mallory field goal and another short run by Murphy put
the Tigers up 17-0 in the second quarter. The Majors, however, would
respond with an 83-yard drive. After completing a pair of passes
to Foisy and McCarty, Orsagh hit Foisy again for a 35-yard pass
to the DePauw 10. Roy would punch it in from four yards out to pull
the Majors within ten.
The rally was abruptly ended, as the Tigers mounted an eight play
83-yard drive on the ensuing possession. Wiethoff connected with
Brian Culp for 48 yards to set up a three-yard plunge by Marks.
The Majors appeared as though they had again answered back when
Orsagh connected with McCarty for a 68-yard touchdown; however,
the play was called back due to an illegal procedure. After the
Majors failed to convert on third-down, a high snap sailed over
punter Todd Rhoden's head, allowing DePauw to take over at the Millsaps
10 with 1:49 left in the half. The Millsaps defense would hold,
but Mallory connected on his second field goal of the day to put
the Tigers ahead 27-7 at the half.
DePauw would dominate the entire second half, scoring 24 more unanswered
points on a 32-yard pass from Wiethoff to Marks, a two-yard run
by Marks, and a 37-yard scamper by Daniel Stauffer.
The Majors did end the game on a positive with a 71-yard drive
engineered by backup quarterback Juan Joseph. Joseph had a 16-yard
run and then fired a 49-yard strike to Foisy to end the scoring.
Ross Rutledge and Casey Younger led the Millsaps defense with nine
and eight tackles respectively. Josh Hanna, Johnson, and Michael
Sims had seven tackles a piece.
The win was the 500th for the DePauw football program. Millsaps
is 0-8 against DePauw since the Tigers entered the SCAC.
The Majors return to Harper Davis Field to face the Sewanee Tigers
(3-4, 2-1 SCAC) for Purple Pride Day. The following Saturday will
be Homecoming at Millsaps College, as the Majors face the Rhodes
Lynx.
Kickoff Saturday against Sewanee is slated for 1:30.
