Hooten's First Half Goals Power Panthers Past Majors 6-0
Birmingham-Southern improves to 8-3, Millsaps falls to 3-8-1

October 13, 2007

JACKSON -- Sophomore midfielder Claire Hooten and senior midfielder Mandy Woods netted two goals apiece and goalkeepers Brittany Green and Ruth Hanks combined for a shutout between the posts as the visitors from Birmingham-Southern topped Millsaps 6-0 on Saturday afternoon at Harper Davis Field.

The duo scored the first two goals of the game in the 15th and 18th minute, as Hooten beat Majors keeper Elizabeth Sooby to the upper left 90 off an assist from Anne McIntyre – one of two on the day – and Woods took advantage of a wide open net off a delivery from Serena Murphy.

Birmingham-Southern (8-3), a SCAC provisional member who is transitioning down to Division III and cannot compete for a conference championship until 2010, stifled the Majors on the stat sheet.

The Lady Panthers outshot Millsaps 21-3 (12-2 shots-on-goal) for the contest and quieted any kind of an offensive attack from Leslie Robichaux, Erin Sanford and Megan Sullivan with a stiff defense.

BSC added to its lead in the 56th minute off a goal from senior Caitlin Gordon, using an assist from McIntyre before a pair of goals in the 63rd and 77th minute for the final 6-0 margin.

All three of the Majors’ shots came in the second period by way of Robichaux and sophomore defender Meredith Harris, who fired two shots-on-goal off indirect kicks deep outside the Panthers’ box where Hanks was waiting.

Millsaps (3-8-1, 0-4-1 SCAC) will try and snap a four-game skid on Sunday as they continue a four-game homestand at Harper Davis Field against the University of Dallas. Kickoff is slated for 3 p.m.
