JACKSON -- Senior shortstop Kim Woodard went a combined 5-for-7 with a homerun, two RBIs and four runs to help lead visiting LaGrange College to a doubleheader sweep over Millsaps College, 7-3, 6-2, in the Majors' home-opener on Saturday afternoon.
Kristi Underwood proved to be the difference in Game 1, batting a perfect 3-for-3 from the plate with two doubles and four RBIs, while Chloe Turnipseed and Dicie Holland picked up an RBI apiece.
For Millsaps, freshman Jennifer McKinley continued her dominance at the plate, picking up a pair of RBIs off a double and a solo homerun (1) in the bottom of the sixth. Erica Douglas, Amanda Stevens, Jessica Clincy and Morgan Ladner each picked up a hit in the loss.
LaGrange took a 6-1 lead into the sixth inning and held on for the 7-3 win on the heels of Amanda Daniel (1-1) who pitched a complete game in the circle for the Panthers. Daniel struck out a season-high 13 batters while scattering seven hits, three runs and a walk.
In Game 2, Meagan Henry (2-1) picked up her second win of the season, surrendering eight hits, three walks and two late runs in the bottom of the seventh.
The Panthers jumped out to a quick 4-0 margin by taking advantage of two Millsaps errors, two RBI groundouts and a sacrifice fly from Underwood to plate four runs in the second frame.
They added a run in the third and sixth and held off a late two-out rally from the Majors in the seventh to win the game 6-2, their third straight victory over Millsaps this season.
Six different Majors picked up a hit, including senior catcher Renee Hebert, who went 3-for-4 with a run scored to boost her batting average to .296 on the season.
Millsaps is still searching for its first victory this season and will try and get back on the right track against Piedmont College in a doubleheader on Monday, March 5, at Freedom Ridge Park in Ridgeland.
