JACKSON -- After
a March 1 rainout against Division I foe Jackson State University
on Thursday, the Millsaps netters improved their spring season
record to 2-0
with a 7-2 victory over the visitors from Huntingdon College
on Saturday.
Millsaps took two out of three doubles points from the Hawks,
winning at the No. 1 slot, 8-2, and the No. 3 slot, 8-3. The
No. 1 duo of Russell Turley/Alex Cummings defeated the pair
of Glenn Rudolph/Dalton Allen while Wes Hill/Trevor Harris knocked
off Patrick Carnathan/Will Fagerstorm at No. 3 doubles.
The lone doubles point for Huntingdon came from Al Zachos/Kent
Hagan who knocked off Millsaps' Tim Shoptaugh/Murphey Parker
at No. 2 doubles, 8-4.
In singles action the Majors took 5 of 6 matches, with the lone
blemish coming at the No. 6 slot where Carnathan defeated Michael
Puckett in a heated battle, 7-6 (4), 7-6 (3).
Turley won 6-4, 6-4, at No. 1 singles, Cummings won 7-6 (1), 6-2,
at the No. 2 position, Parker won 6-4, 6-1, Shoptaugh won 6-2, 6-0,
and Harris won 6-4, 6-4 at No. 5 singles.
With the March 3 and 4 matches cancelled against Stillman College
and West Alabama, the men will play next at Gulf Coast Community
College at 2 p.m. on Friday, March 9.
