MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- The Majors dropped a heartbreaker to Oglethorpe University, losing by a final match count of 4-3. The Majors fall to a season record of 7-4, 0-1 in the SCAC.
The Majors were favored going into the doubles, but lost the deciding point in a doubles sweep. The #10 ranked team of Eckhardt and Malone were outplayed by Russell Turley and Tim Shoptaugh. However, critical points didn’t go the Major's way and Turley and Shoptaugh fell 8-5. Jeff Newbern and Travis Scharr lost in a tiebreak 9-8 and 7-4 to give the Petrels the doubles sweep. Wes Hill and Trevor Harris were upset 8-4 by Esterline and Faucette as the Majors headed into singles competition shocked by the Petrels.
The Petrels were up 1-0 and soon led 2-0 as #13 ranked Eckhardt VanderLinde easily handled #1 Russell Turley 6-1, 6-1. Wes Hill decreased the lead to 2-1 with a 6-3,4-6, 10-3 win over John Esterline at #3 position. Chris Rolen tied the score at 2 a piece with a convincing 6-2, 6-3 win at #5 over Gabe Henderson. Trevor Harris followed suit with a 6-4, 7-6 (3) at #6 to give the Majors a 3-2 lead. Drew Malone upset Tim Shoptaugh at #2 6-4, 6-0 to even the tie at 3 a piece. Michael Puckett played a close deciding match but fell to Derin Pekin 6-3, 6-3.
