MEMPHIS, Tenn. --The Millsaps Men’s Tennis Team dropped all of their against a very competitive #15 ranked Rhodes College team. However, many of the matches were very close. The loss drops the Majors to 7-5, 0-2 in the SCAC.
Rhodes swept the doubles with #7 ranked Mansur and Bayer handling Russell Turley and Tim Shoptaugh 8-1. With Travis Scharr needing to perform with the Millsaps Singer Chorus group, the Majors were forced to bump up Hill and Harris to #2 as they were handled 8-2 by Hammond and Martin. Playing for the first time together this season, Jeff Newbern and Jonathon Giurinatano lost 8-1 to Bohnert and Gates.
Down 1-0, all singles matches were well played, but the final scores all favored Rhodes. Junior Russell Turley played his best match of the year in a losing effort to #14 Kareem Mansur at the top position. Tim Shoptaugh played subpar to his abilities and standards, but still had chances to win. Shoptaugh ended up losing 6-2,6-4 to Scott Bayer.
Chris Rolen, playing the hottest of the Majors, was cooled by Matt Ricke at #6 6-1,6-2. Trevor Harris, the next hottest player, managed to lose all sets but played Alex Gates very close the whole match. Wes Hill loses to Daniel Hammond 6-1, 6-1 at #3 and Michael Puckett lost in the match of the day at #4 losing 2-6,6-1,6-0 to Adam Bohnert to make the final score 7-0. |
