JACKSON -- In
the spring season and home-opener for the Millsaps women this past
weekend, the lady netters defeated Tougaloo College, 5-1,
without losing a match.
At the No. 1
doubles slot, the duo of Emily Stewart and Allison Zakaras knocked
off Cillora Hicks and Eleysia Perkins by a score of 8-0 while Millsaps'
No. 2 doubles team of Beth Sadler and Beth Piraino defeated Jessica
Smith and Rukiya Umoja by a count of 8-2.
In singles play, Stewart and Rukiya battled it out at the No. 1
spot before the match was called 5-7, 6-3.
At No. 2 singles, Zakaras
downed Perkins in straight-sets, 6-0, 6-1, while Sadler defeated
Hicks 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 3 slot, and Beth Fossen defeated Jasmine
Woods 6-1 and 6-3.
The No. 4 singles match between Piraino and Charity Foster was
discontinued with Piraino holding a 6-1 lead while there were no
opponents in the No. 6 hole.
The final score of 5-1 included a forfeit due to not enough players
for the match.
Millsaps (1-0) will try and build off its season-opening win when
they play host to Division I Jackson State University on Thursday,
March 1 at 2 p.m.
