Millsaps women cruise through without losing a match

February 23, 2007

JACKSON --
In the spring season and home-opener for the Millsaps women this past weekend, the lady netters defeated Tougaloo College, 5-1, without losing a match.

At the No. 1 doubles slot, the duo of Emily Stewart and Allison Zakaras knocked off Cillora Hicks and Eleysia Perkins by a score of 8-0 while Millsaps' No. 2 doubles team of Beth Sadler and Beth Piraino defeated Jessica Smith and Rukiya Umoja by a count of 8-2.

In singles play, Stewart and Rukiya battled it out at the No. 1 spot before the match was called 5-7, 6-3.

At No. 2 singles, Zakaras downed Perkins in straight-sets, 6-0, 6-1, while Sadler defeated Hicks 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 3 slot, and Beth Fossen defeated Jasmine Woods 6-1 and 6-3.

The No. 4 singles match between Piraino and Charity Foster was discontinued with Piraino holding a 6-1 lead while there were no opponents in the No. 6 hole.

The final score of 5-1 included a forfeit due to not enough players for the match.

Millsaps (1-0) will try and build off its season-opening win when they play host to Division I Jackson State University on Thursday, March 1 at 2 p.m.
