Lady Majors Return Unscathed from Memphis Trip
Millsaps improves to 10-4, eyes SCAC Championships in Waco, Texas

April 16, 2007

MEMPHIS, Tenn. --
In a rain-shortened weekend at the annual Rhodes College Invitational, the Millsaps Lady Majors only played two of their five regularly scheduled matches, downing both Oglethorpe and Hendrix by a 5-1 score to improve their season record to 10-4.

In the weekend opener against Oglethorpe, Millsaps swept all three doubles points to jump out to a commanding 3-0 lead and grabbed two of the three singles matches before the match was called because the Majors had already won 5 of 9 possible points.

At No. 1 doubles, the duo of Beth Sadler/Beth Piraino defeated Antoinette Niland/Ashley Cooper by a score of 8-5 while the team of Allisa Vincent/Charlotte Prejean held off Jamie Dillon/Abby Hammond at No. 3 doubles, 8-6.

Allison Zakaras/Beth Fossen had no trouble at No. 2 doubles, winning easily 8-0.

In singles action, Zakaras {pictured} and Fossen were both victorious at their respective No. 1 & No. 4 spots, downing their opponents in straight-sets, 6-0, 6-3 and 7-6, 6-4. The lone point for Oglethorpe came at No. 2 singles when Katie Kuhn edged Sadler, 7-6(4), 7-5.

Against the Lady Warriors of Hendrix, Erin Swaller/Caitlin Stevens downed the pair of Emily Stewart/Zakaras, at No. 1 doubles for the Lady Warriors' lone point of the match, 9-7, before Millsaps rallied for five consecutive points.

At No. 2 and No. 3 doubles, the combination of Sadler/Piraino and Vincent/Fossen took care of business against Hendrix's Clair Spivey/Liz Blackman, 8-3, and Kate Stuppy/Emily Kueney by an 8-1 margin.

Millsaps then captured No.'s 4-6 singles for the 5-1 final score, while the top three singles positions of Stewart, Zakaras and Sadler did not play.

The Lady Majors will be back in action on Tuesday, April 24, facing off with cross-town rival Mississippi College in a rescheduled match from a previous rainout at 2 p.m. at Parham Bridges Tennis Center in Jackson.

They will then begin preparations for the SCAC Tournament held April 27-29 in Waco, Texas, where the Majors are likely to be a No. 4 or No. 5 seed.
