The women’s tennis
team returns four starters for the 2006-07 campaign. All-SCAC
selection Katie Anderson
(Shawnee Mission, Kan.) will be sorely missed this season, as
she returns to help with the program not as a player but as a
graduate
student.
The season is highlighted by a spring break trip
to Orlando, Fla., three trips to Texas, a conference showdown
in Memphis, Tenn., an ITA regional in Texas and an ITA fall
event.
The SCAC has four teams nationally ranked in the top six and
five
in
top 25.
The Lady Majors
look to continue their progression
after a seventh place finish last season. Each year the team
has progressed as it has
added a new recruiting class. This year is no different, with the
addition of Allison Zakaras of Gulfport and Beth Fossen from
Ocean Springs. Allison
and Emily Stewart, sophomores from Mobile, Ala., will play
at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots this season.
Emily, who posted a 6-3 record last season at the No. 2 and
No. 3 positions, was also a 2006 ITA National
Scholar-Athlete
Award
recipient. Allison and Emily will begin the season at the No. 1
doubles spot and should be a formidable pair.
Beth Fossen
will likely see playing time at the No. 3 position, while Beth
Piraino (4-7) and Beth Sadler will
likely share the No. 4 and No. 5 positions. The sophomore from
Tuscaloosa, Ala., Allisa Vincent (3-8), and the senior
Leslie Frese from Birmingham (5-4) will both see playing time,
as both played in a handful of matches last season.
The Lady Majors
have twice garnered National ITA All-Academic Team accolades
and look to make it three years in a row this season. If all
goes well and goals
are met then the Lady Majors should and will make their academic
team goal, a sixth place or better finish, continued community
service
with
the Mississippi School for Deaf, play and train with pride and
vie for the NCAA tournament.
Hope to see you at the courts!
