Millsaps Hosts SCAC Western Divisional Tournament
Majors welcome three nationally-ranked opponents

September 21, 2006

JACKSON - The Millsaps women’s volleyball team will host its second tournament of the season this weekend, playing host to the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Western Divisional Tournament on Friday, Sept. 22 and Saturday, Sept. 23 in the Hangar Dome.

The Majors (6-5, 0-0 SCAC) held their ground last time out hosting the Millsaps Invitational, posting a 3-1 record with wins over Fisk University, Huntingdon College and cross-town rival Mississippi College.

The competition for the weekend should be exciting, with No. 9 Southwestern University (12-1), No. 15 Austin College (13-1), No. 17 Trinity University (7-4) and Hendrix (6-4) all carrying better than a .600 win percentage.

“It’s a big weekend for our conference,” head coach Matt Linebarger said. “With three teams in the Top 20, it will give us a true test to see if we can compete on the national level. I think we’ll be fine and surprise a lot of people by how young and competitive we are.”

Colleen Kelly and Kim Fox lead the attack for the Majors with 98 and 93 kills, which is just a little over 3.10 kills/game average. They also do the dirty work on the defensive side, combining for 170 of the 390 total team digs.

Millsaps as a team has 164 service aces (4.69 aces/game) and is led by freshman setter Sally McCann.

The play of first year sophomore Toni Manley and transfer Ani Babinski will be important this weekend also. At the net, the two middles have combined for 46 of the 56 total team blocks. Manley has tallied 29 blocks on the season (15 solo) and Babinski has racked up 17 blocks, 12 solo stuffs.

“Ani and Toni will help us open our offense,” Linebarger said. “The biggest thing is that we continue to play together."

Millsaps’ first match on Friday is slated for a 4:30 p.m. start against No. 17 Trinity, followed by a 7 p.m. contest against Hendrix College.

They will then hit the court Saturday afternoon for a pair of games against No. 9 Southwestern at 1:30 p.m. and No. 15 Austin College at 4 p.m.
