CLINTON --
In
a hard fought, three-game match at A.E. Wood Coliseum on Tuesday
night between a pair of cross-town rivals, the homestanding
Mississippi College Lady Choctaws got
another
solid
effort
from senior Sam Adams to clip the visitors from Millsaps 3-0.
In a 1 hour and 35 minute match that saw neither team gain
a lead larger than six points, it was the home team who
was ahead on the scoreboard at the end, winning in three close
games by scores of 30-28, 30-24, 30-28.
In Game 1, an ace from freshman libero Amanda Greene forced
Millsaps head coach Matt Linebarger to call the first timeout
of the
match
with the Lady Chocs leading 5-2.
Out of the timeout, the teams traded points (9-9) to bring
the count to 14-11 in favor of MS College before a huge kill
from freshman Kate Hall capped off a 6-3 run for the Majors
to bring the game all square at 17-17.
An ace from freshman Brittany Mitchell put
the Lady Chocs back out front at 20-19.
Millsaps (10-18, 4-7 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference)
took a 28-27 lead after a block attempt from MS College sailed
out of bounds, but it was the Lady Chocs who rallied for the
final three points to take the game 30-28.
MS College (13-14, 6-9 American Southwest Conference) received
another strong game from Adams in Game 2, pushing the Lady
Chocs to an 18-14 advantage on a pair of kills.
After an attempt from Mitchell sailed into the net for MS College,
it was Millsaps who gained a little momentum and knotted the
game at 19-19 on a 5-1 run.
The juice wouldn't last for long though, as the Lady Chocs
jumped back out to a 23-21 lead off a thundering
kill from freshman Katie Rowland that forced Linebarger to
call a timeout and rally the troops again.
MS College would rally for seven of the final 10 points for
the 30-24 win out of the timeout.
A big block from freshman Heather Keenan on the dangerous Adams
jumpstarted a 5-1 run for the Majors to open Game 3, as the
Deerfield Beach, Fla., native capped off a block with a kill
for Millsaps' fifth point.
Once again the Lady Chocs would rally to regain the lead at
8-6 before Millsaps won the "first to 10 battle" and ran off
six-straight points for the 12-8 lead.
Ashley Schinzing's strong
serving brought MS College back out front at 13-12, but was
trumped by the Majors' sophomore Sally McCann who led Millsaps
back to even at 17-17 on four consecutive service points.
From there, the Chocs stretched the lead to 27-23 and held
off a 5-3 push by the Majors at the end for the Game 3 win
and match.
Millsaps will return to the Hangar Dome Wednesday and Thursday
evening, playing host to Dillard University and Wesley College
at 7 p.m. They will then hit the road for a four-game swing
at the SCAC Divisional in Greencastle, Ind. on the campus of
DePauw University.
