Students of the Classics
at Millsaps graduate with a knowledge that we can never escape a sense
of our past...nor should we wish to. The powerful traditions of Greece
and Rome, especially in the realms of literature, art, philosophy,
and religion, still permeate our lives: to know ourselves, we must
know them.
In a world of growing multiculturalism, Classical Studies offers models of the
profound encounters between conflicting and complementary elements: Greek and
Roman, civilization and barbarism, paganism and Christianity, slavery and freedom,
ignorance and education, poverty and wealth, men and women, ancient and modern.
The
Department of Classical Studies bids a fond farewell
to Dr.
Catherine Freis

Kane Ditto, Dr. Freis, Deidre Thompson,
and Joy Thompson at Dr. Freis' retirement party.
After 32.5
years of dedicated teaching and service, Dr. Catherine Freis
retired amid two celebrations
by the students and faculty of Millsaps College. Her boundless
enthusiasm for the ancient world inspired countless students,
and she will be sorely missed.
Happily,
we also celebrated the arrival of our dynamic new colleague,
Dr. Daniel Turkeltaub. See the faculty page to read about
his teaching and research interests in Greek
epic and drama.
