Take courses in various fields and consider double majoring
or pursuing a minor:
"Take all the courses you find interesting whether or not
they have to do with your required subjects for the English major.
Explore even if that means an extra semester or two. I took numerous
courses in Political Science, a Latin American study course, and
Econ and Accounting courses. Companies are looking for well-rounded
individuals with critical thinking and communication skills. Don't
box yourself in. I remember that the students in the Business department
looked at me strangely when I was in Econ 2 like what are you doing
here but it is so important at the point in life to explore different
options and alternative paths."
"I was a Geology and English major. I thought I'd go into
environmental sciences and work on environmental problems from a
technical angle. As it turns out, I've gone into finance, but my
specialty is socially responsible investing, so it is very much
connected to environmental issues."
"I had a Business Administration minor at Millsaps, in addition
to my English major. I was undecided my senior year as to whether
I wanted to pursue a PhD and become an English professor, or whether
I wanted to get an MBA and pursue options in the business world.
I ended up doing the latter, thinking I would have more/different
options, and that I could always go back and get the PhD if I really
wanted to at some point."
"Take elective business/marketing courses to have some business
background. This little bit will give an English major some skills
and education that they will probably need in any job. I wish someone
had recommended that I take some business classes."
