Types of Assistance

The Millsaps Office of Financial Aid is committed to joining with students' families to make a Millsaps education as affordable as possible. Most students who enroll at Millsaps receive financial assistance from us; in fact, more than 90% of this year's entering students received some kind of assistance.

There are several types of aid available to you.

Academic Scholarships

Academic scholarships at Millsaps are competitive and are awarded without regard to financial need. From the Second Century Scholarships to smaller, specialized endowed scholarships, all our awards seek to recognize outstanding achievement and/or potential for success in a collegiate setting. In order to be considered for academic scholarships at Millsaps, the Application for Admissions and Scholarships (or the Common Application) is the only document needed. Paper applications are available by calling the Millsaps Admissions Office at 800-352-1050. Be sure to postmark the application or apply online by the appropriate deadline to ensure maximum scholarship consideration.

Millsaps United Methodist Scholarships & Aid

John Wesley Scholarships
John Wesley Scholarships are worth 1/2 the cost of tuition, fees, and room and board. These scholarships are awarded to United Methodist students, admitted to Millsaps College, who have an ACT score of 26 or above (1170 SAT) with a minimum GPA of 3.5.

Charles Wesley Scholarships
Charles Wesley Scholarships are worth 1/2 the cost of tuition and fees. These scholarships are awarded to United Methodist students, admitted to Millsaps College, who have an ACT score of 25 or below (1130 SAT) with a GPA of 3.4 or less.

To apply for Wesley Scholarships, a recommendation letter verifying church membership should be sent from the student’s Minister or Youth Minister before March 1. Both levels of Wesley Scholarships lock in at the rates above based on the student’s first year costs.

Dollars for Scholars
The United Methodist Higher Education Foundation (UMHEF) will provide $1000 matching scholarship to the first eligible 325 applicants on a first-come,first-served basis. The sponsoring church must remit a check payable to UMHEF for $1,000 with the completed application form. Candidates must be enrolled or enrolling as a full-time student in the fall semester, in a UM-related college, university, or seminary and be an active member of the UMC for at least one year. Upon verification of enrollment UMHEF will transfer $2,000 to the institution. Only one application per church will be accepted. Only one application per student will be accepted. All information must be completed in order to be considered.

Millsaps Scholarships for Incoming Freshmen:

Presidential Scholarships - Up to $35,000 renewable*
Outstanding students with demonstrated records of excellent academic performance are candidates for Millsaps Presidential Scholarships. Exceptional applicants will be invited on campus to interview for Presidential Scholarships. Submit the Undergraduate Application for Admission or the Common Application by the Early Action Admission deadline on January 12, 2009 to be considered for interviews in February.

Millsaps Awards and Second Century Scholarships - Up to $12,000 renewable*
Millsaps Awards and Second Century Scholarships recognize students who have distinguished themselves academically and/or have made significant contributions to their schools and communities.

Millsaps Leadership Scholarships - Amounts vary and are renewable*
A limited number of Leadership Scholarships are awarded to students who have demonstrated exceptional leadership ability and service in their school and community. The admissions application with supporting extracurricular activities document or resume serves as the Leadership Scholarship application.

Performing Arts & Fine Arts Scholarships - $500—$3,000 renewable*
These awards recognize demonstrated talent in music (piano, organ, voice), theatre, and studio art. An audition or the submission of a portfolio is required. Candidates for scholarships in the performing arts will be invited to Fine Arts Audition Days as follows:

  • Fine Arts Portfolio Reviews: February 20, 2009
  • Performing Arts Auditions: February 20, 2009

Jonathan Sweat Music Scholarships - $2,000 to $4,000 renewable*
These scholarships are for students who commit to a major in music. Named for emeritus professor Dr. Jonathan Sweat, these scholarships recognize students who demonstrate extraordinary potential to excel in music performance. Renewal is contingent upon a successful student record of quality performance at Millsaps College. Requires audition on Fine Arts Audition days.

Phi Theta Kappa Scholarships - Up to $15,000 renewable*
Awarded to active Phi Theta Kappa members based on academic performance, PTK office positions held, and other campus involvement and leadership activities.

Scholarships for Out-of-State Students - $3,000 renewable*
For our out-of-state students, we provide Millsaps versions of several state scholarship programs. These awards are in addition to other scholarships and are based on academic performance:

  • Florida residents — Millsaps Bright Futures Scholarship
  • Georgia residents — Millsaps HOPE Scholarship
  • Kentucky residents — Millsaps KEES Scholarship
  • Louisiana residents — Millsaps TOPS Scholarship
  • Tennessee residents — Millsaps HOPE Scholarship

Business, Pre-Medical Studies, Science & Pre-Ministerial Scholarships - Up to $3,000 renewable*
These awards are for students intending to major in programs related to business, medicine, or the ministry and are based on students’ demonstrated academic excellence.

Charles and Eloise Else Scholars Program - $3,000 renewable*
Submit admission application by postmark deadline February 1.

Kelly Gene Cook Scholarships - Up to $8,000 renewable*
Based on financial need; need based eligibility must be reestablished annually. Selection and interview set by the Kelly Gene Cook Charitable Foundation

E.H. Sumners Grant - Amount determined annually; renewable*
Submit admission application by postmark deadline February 1.

Need-Based Financial Aid

To apply for need-based financial aid, students must begin the process by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). We recommend completing this form as soon as possible after January 1, and before our priority financial aid filing date of March 1. Need-based aid recipients must reapply and requalify each year.

There are several types of need-based assistance for which you may demonstrate eligibility:

  • Federal Pell Grant
    The Pell Grant is a federal program available to families with low income. Pell Grants are valued from $400 - 4,050 per year. The maximum amount a student can receive is subject to federal appropriations.
  • Academic Competitiveness Grant (ACG)
    ACG awards provide up to a maximum of $750 per year for entering, first-year Pell Grant recipient students, and up to $1,300 for second-year Pell Grant recipient students. Generally, recipients must: be U.S. Citizens, meet the high school graduation date requirement, be enrolled full-time, have completed an academically rigorous high school program of study, and must maintain a 3.0 or better college grade-point average.
  • National Science and Mathematics Access to Retain Talent Grant (SMART)
    SMART awards provide up to a maximum of $4,000 per year for third- and fourth-year Pell Grant recipient students majoring in one of the eligible science, mathematics and/or critical foreign language academic programs.Generally, recipients must: be U.S. Citizens, be enrolled full-time and maintain a 3.0 or better college grade point average. Students must also be enrolled in classes that are required for that eligible academic major each semester.
  • Leveraging Educational Assistance Partnership Grant (LEAP)
    This grant is available to full-time students who demonstrate need and are residents of Mississippi. The grant is valued from $200 - 1,500 per year.  Awards are determined by the Office of Financial Aid.
  • Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (SEOG)
    This federal grant is available to students taking at least two courses, and is valued from $200 - 4,000 per year. Awards are determined by the Office of Financial Aid.
  • Federal Perkins Loan
    A maximum of $20,000 is available for this undergraduate federal program. Repayment and accrual of interest begin at the rate of 5% nine months after the student completes study or drops below half-time status.
  • Federal Subsidized Stafford Loan
    $3,500 available for the first year of study, and a total of $23,000 available for the undergraduate program. Subsidized Stafford Loans carry a variable interest rate capped at 8.25%. Repayment begins six months after the student completes study or drops below half-time status.
  • Federal Unsubsidized Stafford Loan
    Valued at the same amount as a Subsidized Stafford Loan, this program expands borrowing privileges to students who do not meet the income criteria for those loans. Terms and conditions are also the same as Subsidized Stafford Loans except that the borrower must pay the accrued interest each year.
  • Millsaps Need-Based Grants
    Amounts vary, and may range from $500 - 10,000 per year. Awards are determined by the Office of Financial Aid, and eligibility must be reestablished each year
  • Scholarships for Need-Based Aid
    Millsaps offers these and many other endowed scholarships to students based on fi nancial need and specifi c eligibility requirements: Asbury Foundation Scholarship; Kelly Gene Cook Scholarship; Hal T. and Doris B. Fowlkes Scholarship; Haining Family Scholarship; Charlotte Murray Pace Scholarship; E. H. Sumners Scholarship; Lettie Pate Whitehead Scholarship
