Associate Professor of History
Kristen T. Oertel teaches classes in early American history and specializes in courses on the Civil War and Reconstruction, African American history, Colonial America and the History of Sexuality. Her research focuses on race and gender in the 19th century.

Oertel's first book, Bleeding Borders: Race, Gender and Violence in Pre-Civil War Kansas, published by the Louisiana State University Press in 2009. Oertel is currently working on a co-authored biography of Clarina Nichols, an abolitionist and suffragette who was active in the 19th-century woman’s rights movement.  The book will be published by the University Press of Kansas in 2011.
