December 16, 2006

Last weekend the Black Student Association hosted its first All White Party. We ordered all of our decorations and food and pretty much put the whole thing together ourselves. It was called the All White Party because we wanted everyone to wear white (or some variation of it). As president I was really nervous because if the party did not go well then I would take it as a personal mark against my leadership – but thank goodness, it was so much fun. There were Millsaps students there, and students from Tougaloo, Jackson State, Belhaven, all over Jackson. And the music was great, plus everyone really liked the food. I was just excited that we were able to plan a programming event for the weekend, one that everyone could enjoy. One of our professors even came and she witnessed the Monkey Swing (a popular dance) for the first time and was amazed by it. We even had a date auction and I was purchased for $45 dollars, the second-highest bid of the night! (A guy bought my suitemate for $52).

Overall the party was a huge success and we even donated part of the proceeds to Stewpot, a community service center in Jackson. During the week following the party a group of the BSA officers went to Stewpot to serve lunch and donate a check for $350. So in essence we were able to have a great party and then serve at the same time. I can’t wait to do it again next year – people are already facebooking me to see when the next party will be.
