“Ask any teacher or student for a short explanation of the liberal arts program at Millsaps College, and you’ll likely get this answer: We teach you how to think, not what to think,” says Dr. Michael Gleason, associate professor of classical studies. “During their time here, our students also learn to view their pursuits in the wider context of what makes life worth living for men and women—how their expertise fits in with life’s great undertakings, how to ask questions of their crucial role as engaged citizens of society, how to weigh evidence in our endless pursuit of truth.”
Dr. Gleason, who has been at Millsaps since 1994, teaches Latin and is Core director at Millsaps College. He also teaches Core courses about the relationship between paganism and Christianity in ancient Rome; the medieval literatures of Ireland, England and Scandinavia; and ancient and medieval epic. He has published in the field of Medieval Latin.
“Things change fast in the twenty-first century,” says Dr. Gleason. At Millsaps we give our students the skills that enable them to adapt to whatever life throws their way.”
