Library research workshops are designed to introduce students to the library and help them find, evaluate and use information.

Half-hour library research workshops will be offered Tuesdays at noon and Wednesdays at 4:00pm in the Millsaps Room.  The two scheduled topics will alternate. Listed below are the daily times, the workshop topics, and a link to the full schedule calendar.

Finding Books at Millsaps and Beyond - Not everything is on the Web. Learn the basics to help save you time and avoid headaches when searching for books on your topic.

Finding Scholarly Journal Articles - Learn what makes a scholarly article different from a popular article and how to find scholarly articles in Ebsco Academic Search Premiere, our largest full-text database, and other databases.

Each workshop is limited to 10 students; therefore, students must sign up by sending an email to librarian@millsaps.edu or by stopping by the library. Professors may require students to attend a workshop. Attendance will be taken, so professors can be notified.

50-Minute Library Basics Instruction Session

As an alternative to the Library Research Workshops, the library also offers a 50-minute instruction session in the library computer lab, covering the following information:
  • Why the library is an important and unique resource
  • How to access the library Web pages (including off-campus access)
  • Features available on the Web site
  • Interlibrary loan
  • Searching the library catalog by author, title, subject, and keyword
  • Accessing personal library account and renewing materials online
  • Locating journal articles through the use of print and electronic indexes
  • Demonstration of EBSCOhost database

The following Additional offerings may be requested by instructors at any time:

  • Searching the Web/Finding scholarly sources on the Web/Citing electronic resources (All or any of these may be selected)
  • Evaluating information sources
  • Finding and viewing microforms
  • Hands-on searching exercises
  • Coaching sessions for students' research projects
  • Custom instruction tailored to your specific topic/resources/information needs (For example, "Finding Contemporary Literary Critcism" or "Slavery in the United States", PsycInfo, MLA Bibliography, Project Muse, or JSTOR, finding literary criticism or company information)
  • Faculty office calls - One-on-one reference - Explore library resources from your office
Unless requested otherwise, all sessions will be conducted in the Library Computer Instruction Room or in the Millsaps Room, with the exception of the session on microforms which will be held in the Microforms/Index Room. We will also be happy to make presentations in your classroom when appropriate. Please note that all sessions need not take up an entire class period.
