Millsaps College junior Ha Lam expects her summer internship at one of the Big Four public accountancy firms to give new meaning to her studies.
“I anticipate that lectures and in-class problems will become much more meaningful and beneficial when being solved due to a substantive point of view of someone who gained a high-quality internship experience,” said Lam, who is working at Deloitte Vietnam in her hometown of Ho Chi Minh City.
“The summer internship with Deloitte will not only strengthen my ability to master the accounting classroom material, but also motivate me to continue to strive toward excellence.”
As part of her duties as an audit support intern, Lam prepares specialized reports, analyzes data and handles other tasks as assigned by the supervisors and managers in charge.
Deloitte stood out, said Lam, because it seemed to especially appreciate her situation as a Vietnamese citizen studying abroad.
Lam credits Tonya Nations, director of the Millsaps College Center for Career Education, for supporting her through the application process, which was online. “I truly can't imagine myself being able to get such a great opportunity without her help and support,” she said.
An accounting major with a finance concentration, Lam said she hopes the experience she gains during her internship will help her decide what type of career she would like.
During the 2016-2017 academic year, Lam will continue to work with BOBA (Bringing Out the Best of Asia), which she founded last year. BOBA hosted a Korean cooking class during last year’s International Education Week.
