Winter Community Enrichment Classes Begin in January

Community Enrichment at Millsaps CollegeExercise your brain this winter by signing up for one of Millsaps College's Winter Enrichment classes. More than 60 non-credit classes are being offered for the winter semester, in areas such as arts, gardening literature, history, fitness and business - just to name a few.

In addition to enrichment class favorites, like beginning photography, Zumba and ballroom dancing, many special offering and new classes will be taught during the winter session. They include Introduction to Southern Studies, Wine 101, Learn to do Magic Tricks, and Floral Design.

Introduction to Southern Studies is a survey classes taught by Millsaps graduate Nell Knox. She also has an M.A. in southern studies from the University of Mississippi. This class begins to define what the South is and isn't. The music, literature, history, politics, folklore and food of the South will all be studied in this four-week class. Participants will watch movie clips, examine historical documents and enjoy southern cooking.

Wine 101 is structured for beginners and wine experts, and everyone in between. The course focuses on the migration of wine from the Black Sea to California and how climate affects wine. Participants will have virtual vineyards, where they will grow and harvest fruit to better understand the process of making wine. Participants will also study and taste red, white, rose, sparkling and fortified wines. The final experience of the class will be practicing wine pairing with different dishes, such as fish, poultry, pork and beef. Wine 101 is taught by John Malanchak, who has completed more than 20 professional wine courses.

For those looking for a more hands-on class, consider Learn to Do Magic Tricks, taught by magician Robert Day. Participants will learn how to do beginning magic tricks involving cards, coins and strings. The class will also offer new insights into the world of magic.

Another hands-on class is Floral Design, taught by florists Tom and Nancy McIntyre. The class will meet at A Daisy A Day, located in Highland Village. Participants will learn the basics of floral design and create their own original floral arrangement, which they will keep.

Winter term enrichment classes begin the week of January 21. Classes are open to anyone age 16 or older and the cost varies.
