Incoming Millsaps 2011 Freshmen to read Malcolm Gladwell's Blink

Millsaps College Freshman Reading Assignment: Malcolm Gladwell's BlinkIncoming freshmen at Millsaps College will read Malcolm Gladwell's national bestseller "Blink" this summer for a reading and writing assignment designed by Millsaps College president Dr. Rob Pearigen. All incoming students are expected to share a reading and writing experience prior to their matriculation. The summer reading assignment has aims to promote a context for campus-wide discussion, foster dialogue about issues of mutual interest, and create an opportunity for members of the freshman class to share a common intellectual experience before their arrival on campus. Once on campus, freshmen will be able to participate in a variety of conversations related to the book.

Malcolm Gladwell, who also wrote the best seller, "The Tipping Point," identifies the "real lesson of 'Blink'" as an understanding that "It is not simply enough to explore the hidden recesses of our unconscious. Once we know about how the human mind works - and about the strengths and weaknesses of human judgment - it is our responsibility to act" (276).

As part of the summer reading and writing program, freshmen are also asked to write a 3-4 page essay describing how Gladwell's book creates inspiration for personal action. Students are encouraged to explore both their inspiration for personal action and share thoughts on how they would execute their own goals and plans.

Orientation for new students is August 18, and classes begin on August 22.
