Student Profile: Kara Sowell, Class of 2014

February 4, 2014

Kara Sowell, a Millsaps senior who is majoring in communication studies, knows firsthand how useful Twitter and Facebook are when it comes to promoting events.

She tweets about events happening at three of Jackson’s most popular restaurants - Broad Street Baking Co.& Café, Bravo! Italian Restaurant & Bar and Sal & Mookie’s New York Pizza & Ice Cream Joint - and updates Facebook as part of her job with the Jackson restaurant group, Mangia Bene. Jeff Good, a Millsaps alumnus, is managing partner of the restaurant group.

In her work, Sowell assists Liz Lancaster, a Millsaps alumna who is marketing manager for Mangia Bene. “I schedule tweets and Facebook posts every day in order to increase awareness of events taking place at the restaurants such as wine tastings, beer dinners and philanthropic endeavors like Traffic for Charities. I also help brainstorm ideas for new promotions. Sal & Mookie's and Broad Street have a College Discount Card that I helped design and organize the details of,” Sowell said.

Although her work relies on technology, the old-fashioned idea of customer service is still important, she said.

“It is imperative in the marketing industry to deal with people in respectful and considerate ways,” she said. “I've learned that the marketing industry has endless opportunities to make new connections with people, and I have loved getting to know so many influential people in Jackson through my internship.”

Even with a time-consuming job, Sowell finds time to be involved on campus. She is a Foundations Leader, student co-chair of The Publications Board and works on The Purple & White. She is a Kappa Delta alumna.

“I love the strong sense of community on campus,” said Sowell, who is from Shreveport, La. “Millsaps welcomes you with open arms and instills a sense of camaraderie that allows for unique and lasting friendships.”

She hopes to acquire a job in the marketing industry after graduation in May. “I have a passion for coming up with creative ways to communicate to the public - any job that allows me to do this would be ideal,” she said.
