Millsaps Receives
$450,000 Gift for Pittman Scholarship Millsaps has received a $450,000 gift from trustee Robert Pittman of Dulles, Virginia, and the Pittman Family Foundation of New York. Given in honor of Roberts parents Warren and Lanita Pittman, the gift will endow the Warren and Lanita Pittman Servant Leadership Scholarship. The scholarship will provide aid to students demonstrating exceptional service leadership, academic excellence, and high financial need. This scholarship is intended to help well-rounded students who desire to serve, states Reverend Warren Pittman, who resides in Madison. Were looking for students with exceptional academic and leadership abilities who will use their education to help other people. The Pittmans chose to create a scholarship at Millsaps because of the Colleges history of service and leadership in Mississippi. Millsaps is not only the best Methodist institution in our state, but it is also one of the best academic institutions in the nation, adds Reverend Pittman. The school has been a leader in some very difficult situations. To be identified with that is important. Millsaps history as a voice for social justice and positive change in Mississippi is due in large measure to the type of student we recruit, states President Frances Lucas-Tauchar. The Pittman scholarship will help us continue to attract students who challenge and conquer societys problems. It is highly gratifying to have the Colleges commitment to service among its students, faculty and staff reinforced by this generous gift in honor of a wonderful clergy couple, says Chaplain Don Fortenberry. The scholarship will be available to an incoming freshman in the fall of 2001 and will be renewable annually for up to four years. Scholarships will cover full tuition, living expenses, and fees.
