Dr. Beverly Lanzetta, founder and president of Scholar Divina and Interfaith Theological Seminary in Santa Fe, New Mexico will present three lectures on her career-long research on the emergence of new spiritual consciousness, the mystical dimension of the feminine, and the importance of spiritual wisdom in the global community. Senior Directing Project One-Acts: Some Girl(s) by Neil LaBute & The International Stud by Harvey Fierstein
Friday-Saturday at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday at 2:00 p.m. – Academic Complex Recital Hall
Student JR Braun directs Some Girl(s) by Neil LaBute. Set in three different hotel rooms, the play follows a soon-to-be-engaged man as he pays a last visit to three ex-girlfriends before taking the plunge. Student Casey Philips directs The International Stud by Harvey Fierstein. Arnold, a drag queen working in New York, while searching for love encounters many twists and turns along the journey.
Cost: $5 general admission
Tickets available in the AC 2nd floor foyer one hour prior to each show.

Arts & Lecture Series: We Are What We Eat — How Food Shapes Culture
Southern Food and Beverage Museum Founder Liz Williams and Chef Dan Blumenthal

Always fascinated by the way nutmeg and peppercorns motivated the exploration of the world, Liz Williams directs this New Orleans museum dedicated to the discovery, understanding and celebration of the culture of food and drink in the South. She will share insight into how many diverse cultures have come together through the centuries to create the region’s unique culinary heritage. The presentation brings all races and ethnicities to the table, from the farmer and the homemaker to the line cook and the celebrity chef. Dan Blumenthal, award-winning chef and partner in Bravo!, Broadstreet, and Sal & Mookie’s restaurants, will offer his own one-of-a-kind take on local flavor as well. Please start collecting menus to add to the SOFAB collection and come hungry, because there will be tasty samples to savor at the reception.

Human affairs have come to dominate the Earth, but for a few months each spring and fall they are humbled by a more ancient and mysterious spectacle:  the passage of tens of billions of migrating birds across the planet.  Matt Smith, GIS specialist at the Mississippi Museum of Natural Science and lifelong birder, explores the feats of navigation and endurance performed by these travelers and the grave threats they now face in an altered world.

Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Adrian Belic describes his film as “Mother Theresa meets Indiana Jones.” The film fol­lows three middle-aged men as they travel the world delivering humanitarian aid. They go directly to people in areas that are too dangerous for conventional aid organiza­tions.

Arts & Lecture Series: An Evening with the Artists — William Dunlap and Anthony DiFatta

Mississippi native William Dunlap has distinguished himself as an artist, arts commentator, and educator during a career that spans more than three decades. His paintings, sculpture and constructions are included in collections at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Corcoran Gallery, the U.S. State Department, and U.S. embassies, and many other museums throughout the world. His 14-panel, 112 foot-long cyclorama Panorama of the American Landscape has been shown in nearly a dozen American museums and art galleries. He writes for such publications as Art & Antiques, Washingtonian, and Arts Review, and has been the arts commentator on WETA-TV’s cultural round table “Around Town” since 1988. Interviewer and artist Anthony “Tony” DiFatta studied painting and sculpture at the University of Southern Mississippi, and his work can be seen in collections throughout the United States, as well as Australia, England, and Italy. He is active in charity, non-profit and historical preservation organizations.

MS Archaeology Expo: A Hands-on Family Fair

Millsaps College Bowl
Archaeologists from Millsaps College, MS Department of Transportation, MS Department of Archives & History, USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service, USDA Forest Service and Mississippi State University will be on hand to assist with artifact identification, cordage bracelet making, rock wall art, potter design/making, flintknapping and much more.

Dr. Edward Hill, North Mississippi Medical Center, president of the World Medical Association

Dr. Hill will compare the U.S. health care system with other developed countries’ systems and discuss ideas for reform.  He will argue that we must rebuild our primary care base with a new model of care to serve a rapidly growing elderly population with an ever increasing number of chronic medical conditions.

Bobbie Wrenn Banks - Women's Action for New Directions

Bobbie Wrenn Banks, a member of and speaker for a nation-wide women's organizing group called Women's Action for New Directions, will make a presentation concerning federal budget priorities and peace initiatives this Wednesday, October 29th, at 6:45 p.m. in the Leggett Center. WAND is a national organization that empowers women to act politically to reduce militarism and violence, and redirect excessive military resources toward human and environmental needs.
Sponsored by the Millsaps Women's and Gender Studies Program.
