Dr. Doug Price from the University of Wisconsin is the first featured speaker in Millsaps College’s Moreton Lecture Series. Price’s public presentation, “Archaeology in the Laboratory: Advancing the Science,” will take place on Thursday, September 25 at 7 p.m. in Gertrude C. Ford Academic Complex room 215. For details about the lecture contact Timothy Ward, 601-974-1405, or wardtj@millsaps.edu.
Dr. Price is the Weinstein Professor of European Archaeology at the University of Wisconsin – Madison and director of the laboratory for archaeological chemistry. In his presentation, Price will review some of the amazing science and technology being applied in the laboratory to archaeological artifacts. An internationally known expert on laboratory approaches to archaeology, Price has conducted archaeological research all over the world. He pioneered the use of strontium isotopes in archaeological bone to track ancient human migrations. This technique has since been used by Price in northern Europe, Mexico, and the American southwest, with startling results.
This year the Moreton Lectures Series will be a year-long celebration of the creation of Millsaps’ new $818,000 W.M. Keck Center for Instrumental and BioChemical Comparative Archeology. The center, which received a $400,000 grant from the W.M. Keck Foundation early this year, will support pioneering interdisciplinary research and allow undergraduate students to explore complex archeological questions using bioanalytical and biochemical techniques. A formal dedication is planned in the spring of 2009.
