This fall, 290 freshmen are expected to arrive on the Millsaps College campus on August 22. The class of 2013 is consistent with the high academic profile Millsaps has traditionally maintained.
Out-of-state students make up 58 percent of the freshman class and represent nearly every region of the country including Colorado, Florida, Maryland, North Carolina, New York, Ohio and Texas. Sixty-two percent of the class graduated from a public high school. The freshmen are joined by international students from China, England, India, Germany and Ireland.
The class is 58 percent male and 42 percent female. Minority students make up 24 percent of the class, making it one of the largest percentages of entering minorities in the College’s history. Minority students are expected to feel right at home—Millsaps was recently praised by The Princeton Review as one of the Top 20 colleges in the country for “Lots of Race/Class Interaction” in the 2010 edition of its guidebook “The Best 371 Colleges.”
Academically, the students have an average ACT score of 26 and an average SAT score of 1154. Seventy-nine students are Top Scholars, students considered for the most generous Millsaps scholarships based on scholastic and leadership qualities. The class includes five valedictorians, four salutatorians and five National Merit semifinalist or commended students.
In addition to outstanding scholarship, the entering Millsaps students are also known for their leadership abilities. The class of 2013 includes four Eagle Scouts, 11 attended Boys or Girls State, and three attended Mississippi Governor’s School. Six were presidents of their high school student body associations.
Two students in the class received Wendy’s High School Heisman, the most prestigious award at the high school level for academic aptitude, athletic talent and community leadership. Approximately 120 members of the class are expected to become scholar-athletes on one or more of Millsaps’ 18 Division III varsity athletic teams. New options this year for varsity sports include men’s and women’s track and field, which will begin competing during the spring semester, and men’s and women’s lacrosse, which will begin competitive play in the 2010-11 school year.
The students have indicated their top five majors are biology, chemistry, business, political science and psychology. Millsaps offers 34 majors and 35 minors—including the option of a self-designed major. New offerings for majors this fall included applied mathematics, communications and Latin American studies. A new minor is offered in peace studies.
In addition to the freshman, 42 transfer students will join the student body. Classes begin for all students on August 25.
