Fortenberry to Address MLK Breakfast Jan. 19

(1/09/09)

Millsaps and Tougaloo colleges will hold their annual prayer breakfast celebration in observation of Martin Luther King Day on Monday, Jan. 19 at 8 a.m. on the Millsaps campus. The public is invited to the free event.

Reverend Don Fortenberry, retired Millsaps college chaplain, will be the keynote speaker. As chaplain for over 30 years, Fortenberry played a key role in leading social change at Millsaps and in the community during the civil rights era.

The theme for the 2009 celebration is “When Silence is Not Golden.” Fortenberry will deliver his remarks at the breakfast, to be held in Millsaps’ Leggett Center, located in the Boyd Campbell College Center.

Millsaps and Tougaloo share a historic past of social progressiveness that bound them together during the Civil Rights Movement. In the early 1960s, Tougaloo courageously opened its doors to civil rights workers, and Millsaps became the first all-white college in Mississippi to voluntarily support and call for integration.

Each year, both colleges continue the tradition of bringing students, staff, faculty, alumni and the community together to celebrate the life of Dr. King.
