Former Millsaps trustee Edward
L. Moyers, Jr., 77,
died Monday, June 5, in Naples, Fla. Funeral services were held
in Ruston, La.
Mr. Moyers
served on the executive committee and the development committee
of the Millsaps Board of Trustees and was named a Life
Trustee of the College in 1998. He was a member of the Founders
Society and the Heritage Society and helped to establish The Helen
Moyers Biocultural Reserve in Yucatan.
A native of Vicksburg, he was a 1947 graduate of Chamberlain-Hunt
Military Academy in Port Gibson. He served in the United States
Navy in the Korean War and was a 1955 graduate of Louisiana Tech
University.
Mr. Moyers had a long and distinguished career in the railroad
industry, mainly with the Illinois Central Railroad in Mississippi,
Louisiana, Kentucky and Illinois. In 1985, he became President
and C.E.O. of MidSouth Rail Corporation in Jackson. In 1989, he
was named President and C.E.O. of Illinois Central Railroad in
Chicago, serving in that position until 1993. Following a short
retirement, he became President and C.E.O. of Southern Pacific
Railway in Denver, Colo., in 1993, a position he held until 1995.
He is survived by his wife, Helen H. Moyers of Naples, Fla.; son
and daughter-in-law Paul and Alison Moyers and their children Meredith
and Alex of Jackson; daughter and son-in-law Nancy and Todd Scarlett
and their sons Ben and David of Charlotte, NC; his sister Mary
Ann Barker of Hamburg, Ark. and brother and sister-in-law Pat and
Linda Moyers of Ruston.
