The air was cool and crisp on December 5 as students, faculty and staff from all over campus filled the Ford Academic Complex recital hall for the 2006 Service for Advent with Lessons and Carols. Hosted by the Millsaps Singers and the Campus Ministry team, the service included readings, prayers and hymns for each Sunday in Advent, and culminated in The Christmas Collect, “Adeste Fideles” and “Silent Night” to signify the approach of Christmas.
The Millsaps Singers, directed by Dr. Tim Coker, sang rousing arrangements of seasonal favorites “Of the Father’s Love Begotten,” “Sans Day Carol,” “Jesus Christ the Apple Tree” and “Sir Christémas.” Millsaps College Chaplain Lisa Garvin led the audience in prayers marking each week of Advent, with other campus community members contributing in the reading of lessons: Terrel Sugar, member of the Millsaps Singers and the Campus Ministry Team; Chelsi West, member of the Black Student Association, the Student Body Association and the Campus Ministry Team; Brad Yakots, member of the Millsaps Singers and outgoing SBA president; John Conway, director of campus life; Dr. George Bey III, professor of anthropology and associate dean of international education; Louise Burney, vice president for finance; and Dr. Frances Lucas, president of the College. |
