Virtuoso Performances To Distinguish the Bell Concert Series

The Bell Concert Series, established in honor of Mrs. Estelle Bell to celebrate the joy of piano playing and to reclaim the power of the piano in concert, begins its third stellar year this fall as one of Mississippi ’s finest venues for world-class musicians.

Millsaps faculty artist Rachel Heard will join the Degas Quartet for a performance of the Fauré C minor Piano Quartet, Op. 15 on Thursday, Sept. 22, in the Recital Hall of the Ford Academic Comples. Also on the program is one of the fiery middle-period "Rasumovsky" quartets of Beethoven. They will repeat the Fauré the same weekend with Rachel Heard on this season's opening UBS Chamber Classics concert series in Hickory, N.C.

The Brno Chamber Soloists, a string chamber orchestra, will perform works by Czech composers, as well as works by Grieg, Mozart, and J.C. Bach on Monday, Oct. 10. The concert will feature soloists Michiko Otaki (piano) and Jan Škrdlík (cello) in concertos by Mozart and J. C. Bach.

The remarkable Melvin Chen will perform Thursday, Nov. 17. A true polymath, Chen earned master's degrees in both violin and piano from the Juilliard School, a double bachelor of science degree in chemistry and physics from Yale, and a doctorate in chemistry from Harvard. His performance will include selections from Beethoven, Chopin, Gershwin and Shostakovich. Chen is on the Yale University piano faculty and is a visiting professor at Bard College.

Jazz pianist Willis Delony and bassist Bill Grimes will present an eclectic selection on Thursday, Jan. 26. Delony has won national and international acclaim as a jazz and classical pianist, conductor, chamber player, commercial composer, and arranger. Delony is an associate professor of piano and jazz studies and coordinator of music in general studies at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge. He is the director of the LSU Jazz Ensemble, which is one of the premier college big bands in the region.

The Estelle Bell Concert Series is proud to annually present the gold medal winner of the Shreveport Symphony's Nena Plant Wideman Piano Competition. This year's winner will perform on Sunday, Feb. 26, at 3 p.m. The Wideman competition is held in Shreveport, La., and the winner is awarded a professional performance as soloist in a concerto with the Shreveport Symphony. The Wideman Competition has a long and distinguished history of choosing young artists who have gone on to international careers, including Stanislav Ioudenitch who, following his win in Shreveport, went on to capture first prize at the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition.

All performances are held in the Recital Hall of the Ford Academic Complex at 7:30 p.m, unless otherwise stated For more information on the Bell Concert Series, click here.
