Millsaps College is pleased to announce that it will begin offering two new majors—biochemistry and public management—starting in the 2007-08 academic year. The new programs bring Millsaps’ offerings to 30 majors within the divisions of arts and letters, sciences and the Else School of Management, plus an option for a self-designed major.
Dr. Michael Reinhard of the Millsaps College political science department was one of the proponents of the public management major, which will combine and build on existing management and political science courses at the college. Dr. Richard A. Smith, senior vice president and dean of the college, says the program meets a need for preparation for public service careers. The public management degree at Millsaps is the first undergraduate degree of its kind in the state—a distinction it will share with the program at Ole Miss.
Dr. Tim Ward, dean of the division of sciences and a chemistry professor, and Dr. Patrick Hopkins, a philosophy professor interested in biomedical ethics, introduced the biochemistry major to the Millsaps faculty late last year. The addition of biochemistry to Millsaps’ offerings shows the emphasis the college places on offering strong premedical programs, though biochemistry isn’t merely grad school prep-work—biochemistry majors are also employed by hospitals, private laboratories and chemical manufacturers.
