Stanley Cowell to Open Bell Piano Series with Several Events

Stanley CowellLegendary jazz pianist Stanley Cowell will open the 2007-2008 season of the Millsaps College Bell Piano Series on Friday, Sept. 21 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets for the concert, which will take place at 7:30 p.m. in the Ford Academic Complex Recital Hall, are $15 general admission and $5 for students and will be sold at the door prior to each performance. Covered parking is available from the Park Avenue entrance off State St. For more information, call 601-974-1422.

Cowell has established his legendary reputation as a versatile and sensitive pianist/composer. Cowell, who has performed and recorded with such greats as Sonny Rollins, Max Roach, Jimmy Heath, Art Pepper and Roy Haynes, is also well known as an educator and engaging speaker. Millsaps professor Dr. Lynn Raley will give a pre-concert talk at 6:15 p.m. in room 215 of the Ford Academic Complex (close to the recital hall).

In addition, Cowell will lend his expertise to a Friday Forum at Millsaps, also on Sept. 21, at 12:30 p.m. in room 215 of the Ford Academic Complex. His talk will reflect on the jazz scene since the 1960s from a personal perspective, complete with recordings. Finally, Cowell will give a master class workshop at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 22, in the Ford Academic Complex Recital Hall. This workshop is also free and open to the public. For more information, call 601-974-1422.
