Syllabus History of Jazz COURSE GOALS This course is designed to give you an understanding of American Creative Music (jazz) through a study of its history. You will become familiar the basic elements of jazz and will listen analytically to important jazz recordings from early New Orleans jazz to contemporary fusion and avant garde free jazz styles. Readings in Paul Berliner's Thinking in Jazz will provide insight into the creative process of performing musicians, showing how the elusive art of improvisation can work at the highest levels. |
