The Unit test will cover ONLY the following material in Bonds (in addition to the Weiss/Taruskin readings):

Chapter 22: The Tonal Tradition

  • skip "Alabama Song" (Weill) and "Alexander Nevsky" (Prokofiev)
  • skip SONG and OPERA/MUSICAL THEATER [Porter, Ellington, Bernstein]

Chapter 23: New Currents after 1945

  • Everything on pp. 618-631
  • (up to ROCK MUSIC)
  • Study pp. 637-643 [MINIMALISM, POSTMODERNISM] - we only touched on the concept of"Postmodernism": KNOW HOW TO DEFINE IT, and listen to the Musgrave piece (Orfeo II) just to hear an example of it
