WRITING
PROJECTS
On some
days you will hand in a brief writing. Sometimes this assignment must be completed
before class. At other times, you will write in class. Often you will be asked
to respond to something from the assigned reading or listening for that day. This
exercise tests basic reading comprehension, focuses your attention on a particular
theme or issue which may become the focus of class discussion, and offers writing
practice.
All writing assignments
(except those done in class) must be computer-typed and printed. You may send
me your assignments as an e-mail attachment, but ONLY if they are in a Microsoft
Word format (.doc). Your e-mail must show that you e-mailed it to me before its
deadline. Keep your assignments and class handouts in your loose-leaf notebook
so you can use them to prepare for exams.
FIELD
RESEARCH PROJECT
Your
study of music cultures will culminate in "field"
research done outside the classroom, wherein you will investigate a particular
"music culture" (defined in Titon) in depth. Your project will involve
putting together recorded interviews (transcribed in your paper), performances,
and pictures (or video). This active learning experience will require you to think
about how culture and music are defined, and how music functions in society. See
"Discovering and Documenting a World of Music" (Chapter 10) in Titon.
